An animated response to the Gujarat earthquake

A Jolt from Deep Within

An animated GIF artwork by Anjali Arora, documented in 2001.

A Jolt from Deep Within responds to Anjali Arora's experience of the earthquake in Gujarat on 26 January 2001. In the project's introduction, she describes trying to convey the fear of that moment through an animated image.

The work takes the form of an animated GIF. Its introduction compares the viewing experience to watching a film: the sequence proceeds without the viewer choosing a route or operating a set of controls. Attention, rather than navigation, is the action the page asks for.

Animation as the form

This makes the project a useful companion to Arora's other web artworks. Welcome to the Met unfolds across gallery scenes; Nothing Is Impossible Out Here reveals dialogues when the pointer moves over requests. Here, the artist's introduction directs the visitor toward a sequence that plays out in front of them.

Finding the historical work

The September 2001 capture below preserves the introduction and its description of the GIF format. The page heading uses A jolt from deep within, while the HTML document title reads A jolt from deep below. Both names therefore occur in the same historical record.

Follow the archived introduction to explore that record. Whitney Artport's Idea Line catalogue also lists the project's original Artbrush address.
